1966년 여름, 뉴저지의 한 술집에서 총성이 울리고 세사람이 쓰러집니다.

패티 발렌타인이라는 여급 및 좀도둑 벨로와 브래들리가 현장을 발견하고 경찰에 신고합니다.

경찰은 한명의 숨이 붙어있다는 것을 알고 병원으로 후송했습니다.

벨로와 브래들리는 두 명의 사내가 흰 자동차를 타고 달아났다는 목격담을 이야기합니다.

한편, 같은 시간 루빈 카터라는 미들급 권투 선수는 친구들과 드라이브를 하다가 불심검문에 걸립니다.

경찰은 그를 의심하여 부상자가 입원해있는 병원으로 대려갑니다.

의식을 겨우 차린 부상자는 루빈 카터를 보고 범인이 아닌데 왜 데려왔느냐고 합니다.

 

 넉달이 지나도록 사건의 범인을 잡지 못한 경찰은 비열한 흉계를 꾸밉니다.

사건 당일날 검거했었던 루빈 카터에게 죄를 뒤집어씌우기로 한거죠.

빈민가 출신의 흑인 권투선수, 평소에 거친 행동을 하여 밉보였던 카터를 희생양으로 삼으려는 것입니다.

브래들리에게 거짓 증언을 하게 하고, 증거를 조작합다. 전혀 공정하지 않은 재판이 진행되고,

백인으로만 이루어진 열두명의 배심원은 마침내 일급살인에 유죄 평결을 내리고 맙니다. 카터는 종신형을 언도받고 감옥에 쳐박힙니다.

 

 카터는 감옥에서 자유와 진실을 위한 싸움을 시작합니다.

자신의 주장을 글로 써서 '16라운드'라는 제목을 붙여 출판합니다.

 

 통기타와 하모니카를 연주하며 반전과 평화와 인권을 주장하는 노래를 부르던 가수 밥 딜런이 이 책을 읽고서  

'정의가 게임에 불과한 나라에서 살기가 참을 수 없이 부끄럽다'는 생각을 합니다.

자끄 레비에게 작사를 부탁하고 손수 작곡을 하여, 루빈 카터의 별명이었던 '허리케인'이라는 제목을 붙여 카터에게 헌사합니다.

 

 그로부터 또 10년이 흐른 1985년, 루빈 '허리케인' 카터는 마침내 연방법원에서 벌어진 재심에서 무죄 판결을 얻어내어 자유의 몸이 됩니다.

무려 20년이라는 긴 세월을 억울하게 감옥에서 보낸 이 권투선수의 이야기는 1999년에 영화로도 만들어집니다.

 노만 주이슨이 감독하고, 덴젤 워싱톤이 카터 역을 맡아서 호연을 펼친 작품이죠.

이 멋진 영화에 대한 이야기는 나중에 좀더 하기로 하고, 오늘은 밥 딜런의 노래만 소개합니다.
