She came from Providence, the one in Rhode Island

그녀는 로데 섬의, 시골에서 왔지... 

Where the old world shadows hang heavy in the air

그 섬은 무거운 공기중에 옛날 이야기들이 떠돌아 다니는 곳... 

She packed her hopes and dreams like a refugee

그녀는 도망치는 사람처럼,그녀의 희망을 간직한채로 짐을 꾸렸네.... 

Just as her father came across the sea

그녀의 아버지가 바다를 건넌 것처럼... 

She heard about a place people were smilin'

그녀는 사람들이 웃고 살며 지낸단 동네를 들은 적이 있네...

They spoke about the red man's way, and how they loved the land

그들은 싸~나이의 길에 관해, 얼마나 그들이 그 땅에 대해 사랑했는 지 이야기하곤 했네

 

And they came from everywhere to the Great Divide

거대한 구역(살기 좋다는 구역)으로 가기 위한 사람들은 각지에서 몰려 들었네....

Seeking a place to stand or a place to hide
당당히 일어서거나 혹은 숨어버리기 위한 마땅한 장소를 물색하면서...

Down in the crowded bars, out for a good time,

즐거운 시간을 보내기 위해 아랫동네의 시끌법적한 "빠" 에도 가고,

 

Can't wait to tell you all, what it's like up there

거기에서 무슨 일이 일어났는지 당신에게 빨리 전해 주고 싶어(기다릴 수 없네)

And they called it paradise I don't know why

사람들은 그 곳을 "천국"이라 불렀지.. 나는 왜 인줄 몰랐네..

Somebody laid the mountains low while the town got high

산이 깍여져 내리고 고층의 도시가 들어섰네...

Then the chilly winds blew down Across the desert

을씨년스러운 바람이 사막을 가로질러 불어왔지...

through the canyons of the coast,

해안의 협곡을 가로질러서....

 

to the Malibu Where the pretty people play,

hungry for power to light their neon way and give them things to do

아름다운 아가씨들이 자기들에게 할 일을 주고, 네온을 밝혀주게 하는

권력자들과 난리부루스하는 말리부 해변을 향해 바람이 불어가네..

Some rich men came and raped the land, Nobody caught 'em 

어느 부자들이 오더니 그 대지를 농간해 버렸지,,,,아무도 그들을 말릴 수 없었어..

Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus,.. people bought them

못 생긴 상자들을 덩그렇게 놓더니, 신이시여(주여)... 어쩌고 저쩌고,,,, 사람들은 그걸 샀지..

And they called it paradise The place to be

그리곤 사람들은 그곳을 "천국"이라 불렀네..."천국"이 될거라 하였다네....

They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea

그들은 태양이 안개낀 바다속으로 저무는 것을 보았네....

You can leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina

당신은 그 모든 것을 뒤로한 채 라하이나로 항해해 갈 수가 있어...

just like the missionaries did, so many years ago

선교사들이 오래전 그랬던 것처럼 말이얌....

They even brought a neon sign:''Jesus is coming''

그들은 "예수강림"이라 적혀 있는 네온 싸인을 사기도 했지...

Brought the white man's burden down Brought the white man's reign

백인들의 짐을 가져오기도 하고, 백인들의 지배를 가져오기도 하고...

Who will provide the grand design?

어느 누가 이런 광오한 계획을 세웠는가?

What is yours and what is mine?

도대체 무엇이 내꺼고, 무엇이 니꺼인가?

더이상의 새로운 국경이 없기 떄문에, 우리들은 여기에 모였지.. 

We satisfy our endless needs and justify our bloody deeds,

우리는 끝없는 욕망을 만족시키며, 우리의 피의 악행을 정당화시켰지...

운명이라는 이름으로, 때로는 "신의 이름"으로....말이지...

그리고는  일요일 아침에는 그들이 함께 모여, 일어나 노래하는 곳, 것을 목격할 거네...

도대체 나는  왜 그런줄 몰갔떠.... 징짜로... ㅠㅠ
